SUBJECT BEFORE COLLEGE
I can’t stress enough how important it is to choose the subject that’s right for you BEFORE the college you want to enrol onto. Don’t just think ‘I want to go to the best fashion school in New York so let’s see what FIT has to offer’ and then enrol on a course you might not even enjoy. Yes, I’ve done that before. So I’m trying to prevent you from making the same mistake. Decide which area(s) of fashion would most likely interest you first (do you have a business mindset, do you like advertising products, or would you prefer more of a design-based course?). The college you’re going to apply to doesn’t matter yet at this point and shouldn’t define what degree you’re going to enrol onto.
Type into Google a few keywords that sound appealing to you (e.g. fashion marketing, fashion promotion, fashion journalism… there are almost endless combinations!) and get reading. Go on websites like fashionworkie and have a look at the categories that sound good to you.
Click on a category and have a look at the positions on offer. Look at the details below the job. What does it entail? Is it something you’d like to do? What are the working hours? What’s the salary like – is it an amount you’d like to be earning one day? What kind of brands are offering this role, would you be happy working for them? What kind of degree do they require?
Make a list of the jobs that sound appealing to you. Now you have an idea of the area you’d like to work in. That’s a good start.
RESEARCH. RESEARCH. RESEARCH.
Now you can start researching your course! Again, type the same keywords into Google and visit the pages of the colleges that pop up. Make a list of the colleges that offer the course(s) you’d enjoy studying. Spend some time reading the modules they offer, don’t just look at the subject titles. Some degrees might sound great but have boring modules. You never know. The more you know about the course, the better! Once you know what you’d like to study, it’s time to choose your college!
